(Almost) Ten Pet Peeves of Grammar Usage
What we say doesnââ¬â¢t always line up with what we write. The IEW community always encourages proper usage in both writing and speech. Our Facebook community listed nine pet peeves on our Facebook page. See the original post here that started a whirlwind of comments from IEW fans. Weââ¬â¢re struggling to come up with a tenth. Can you add to this list? From Denise G.: ââ¬Å"Deep-seededâ⬠should be ââ¬Å"deep-seated.â⬠ââ¬Å"Use toâ⬠should be ââ¬Å"used to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Suppose toâ⬠should be ââ¬Å"supposed to.â⬠From Marci H.: ââ¬Å"Did you see the pitcher I posted on FB?â⬠It should be ââ¬Å"picture,â⬠not ââ¬Å"pitcher.â⬠From Kathy A.: ââ¬Å"Irregardlessâ⬠should be ââ¬Å"regardless.â⬠From Linda H.: ââ¬Å"Could ofâ⬠should be ââ¬Å"could'veâ⬠(also goes for ââ¬Å"shouldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"wouldâ⬠). From Karla M.: "I could care less" means that yes, you actually could care less. You probably mean, ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t care less.â⬠Another from Karla M.: Saying "yous" with an ââ¬Å"sâ⬠is inappropriate. ââ¬Å"Yous need to learn more better English.â⬠From Ericka S.: ââ¬Å"A lotâ⬠is correct, not ââ¬Å"alot.â⬠From Ravalli C.: ââ¬Å"I like these ones" should be ââ¬Å"I like theseâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I like this one.â⬠From Michelle G.: People use ââ¬Å"wheneverâ⬠when they should just use ââ¬Å"when.â⬠Now we need a tenth. Write your usage pet peeve below. We will share the expanded list on our Facebook Page.
